Sin, the Good News, and Baptism According to the Bible - Understanding Salvation

What Is Sin According to the Bible?

Sin, according to the Holy Scriptures, represents disobedience to God’s will and a deviation from His commandments. It is not merely wrongful behavior but a state of the heart and mind that separates us from God. The first sin was recorded in Genesis when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s command:

  • Genesis 3:6: “When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasing to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.”

The Bible reminds us:

  • Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

  • 1 John 1:8: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

The Consequences of Sin

Sin separates man from God and brings death, both physical and spiritual. The Bible says:

  • Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

But through Jesus Christ, God provided a solution to the problem of sin, which leads us to the Good News.

What Is the Good News?

The Good News, or the Gospel, is the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. It brings hope and the promise of eternal life to all who believe and accept Christ as their Savior.

Key Messages of the Good News:

  1. Jesus Christ came to save sinners:

    • John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

  2. Jesus paid the price for our sins:

    • 1 Peter 2:24: “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”

  3. Salvation is a gift, not earned:

    • Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

How to Receive the Good News?

  • Repentance: Truly repent for sins and change your heart and mind.

  • Faith in Jesus Christ: Accept Him as Lord and Savior.

  • Baptism: As a symbol of faith and obedience, which leads us to the next section.

What Is Baptism According to the Bible?

Baptism is a step of obedience to God’s will. It is not merely a ritual but a public testimony of faith in Christ.

  • Mark 16:16: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”

1. Cleansing from sin:

Acts 2:38: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

2. Symbol of a new life:

Romans 6:4: “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we also should walk in newness of life.”

3. A conscious decision:

Jesus Christ was baptized at the age of 30 as an example to all:

  • Matthew 3:14-16: “And John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?’ But Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.”

Conclusion

Sin separates us from God, but the Good News brings hope and salvation through Jesus Christ. Baptism is a symbol of a new life and obedience to God. To attain salvation, repentance, faith, and obedience to God’s Word are necessary.
